Our Man in the Farasan

Tourism Partner Jim Fletcher attended the Saudi Travel and Tourism Investment Market (STTIM) held recently in Riyadh, participating on the Farasan Islands stand (pictured) as part of his on-going work on the Farasan Islands Tourism Master Plan project being undertaken for the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH).

Under the slogan of "Tourism is the forum of all industries," the Saudi Travel and Tourism Investment Market 11th session had participation from decision-makers including governmental agencies, the private sector and those working in the national tourism industry.

Farasan Islands (Jaza’ir Farasan) is a group of 84 islands (archipelago), under the administration of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in the Red Sea. The main island of Farasan is 50 km off coast of Jizan. A number of uninhabited islands serve as breeding sites for large number of birds and includes a natural reserve for Arabian gazelles and beautiful coastlines .

Jims work fololows press interest in this area-in 2016 the Uk press picked up on the story 'Tourism authorities in the country have announced that 66 islands along the country's Red Sea coast are “ready for investment”. The Farasan Islands – between the port city of Jazan, Eritrea and Yemen – have been earmarked thanks to their clear blue seas, white sandy beaches and coral reefs'.https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/.../saudi-arabia-to-develop-island-beach-resorts

The stand included a video presentation describing the land-based, marine and cultural diversity of the islands and large-scale maps of the archipelago, identifying a number of indicative development locations being considered for inclusion within the Master Plan.

You will hear more of this from our man on the ground as the story and strategy evolves.
