A technical assistance mission to Bhutan examining the status of the existing System of Tourism Statistics and its preparedness for the eventual introduction of the Tourism Satellite Account, a methodological approach for the measurement of the economic contribution of tourism to the national economy.
Directly appointed by UNWTO to conduct this evaluative and diagnostic mission designed to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the System of Tourism Statistics and possible institutional shortcomings needing to be addressed before an experimental Tourism Satellite Account could be developed. The Mission conducted a series of detailed consultations with key Ministries and stakeholders and held a five-day statistics workshop to evaluate the situation and formulate a series of recommendations for technical assistance and capacity building initiatives to support the eventual introduction of an experimental Tourism Satellite Account.
The Tourism Council of Bhutan and the UNWTO have accepted the recommendations of the Mission Report and the technical assistance initiatives have been implemented.
